Horse Trailer Fundamentals
Horse transport can be an expensive business and a horse trailer represents, quite simply, the
most affordable means of getting your horse from A to B, with the possible exception of riding him or her there
yourself!
There are a number of fundamentals to bear in mind when considering using a
horse trailer. Firstly, you need to ensure that you have a vehicle with sufficient power to tow the trailer
safely when loaded. Much will depend on the weight of the trailer and, of course, your horse or horses. There
is a world of difference between a heavy aluminium trailer with living space loaded with 2 heavy cobs and a
light fibreglass trailer loaded with one lightweight Thoroughbred.
Secondly, you need to remember that towing any trailer is an art in itself, let alone a trailer
loaded with a precious cargo such as your horse. If you are in any doubt then our strongest advice would be to have
some towing driving lessons. We will be featuring some safe towing tips and guidance but there is no substitute for
lessons and practice. Not only that but there are strict driving licence requirements for towing and it is vital,
therefore, that you first check that you have the relevant licence before towing a trailer.
Thirdly, buying a horse trailer is also a potential minefield and we will be featuring advice on
buying both the right new trailer for you and your horse as well as things to look out for when buying a used or
second hand horse trailer. A careful inspection is a must and if you are not experienced in this respect then our
advice would be to ask someone who is!
Finally, loading your horse onto a trailer can become the source of great anxiety for horse and
owner too. Remember that it can be stressful for your horse, particularly if he or she has come to fear travelling
due to erratic driving or problems loading. We hope you enjoy the video below and find the techniques demonstrated
by Monty Roberts useful.
